Comedian Munawar Faruqui, who gained fame as the winner of Salman Khan's reality show Bigg Boss 17, recently found himself at the center of controversy after making a derogatory joke about Konkanis. The incident occurred during a performance in Taloja, where Faruqui's comment sparked widespread backlash.

In a video that circulated online, Faruqui was heard saying, "Konkani Log Chu** Banate Hai," which translates to "Konkanis fool others." This remark quickly drew criticism, leading Faruqui to issue a public apology. He explained that the comment was part of "crowd work," a common technique in stand-up comedy where the performer engages with the audience. Faruqui's apology read, "I have noticed that some people are getting hurt over my clip and as a comedian, I don’t want to hurt anyone. Maine jispe joke kiya tha wo logon ne bhi bahut enjoy kiya tha show. Show pe bhi sab log the, Marathi log the, Muslim log the, Hindu log the (The people I made the joke about also enjoyed the show a lot. There were people from all backgrounds at the show— Marathis, Muslims, Hindus). But when we see such things on the internet, and we notice it, we understand the issue. I want to apologise and say sorry to all. Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra.”

This incident is not Faruqui’s first run-in with controversy. In 2021, he faced backlash and was briefly arrested for allegedly making fun of Lord Ram, leading to the cancellation of several of his shows.
