Television star Rupali Ganguly has sparked a major online debate after indirectly calling out Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt over her recent Gucci look at the Milan Fashion Week.
On April 27, Rupali shared an Instagram story featuring a viral video by a user named Sai Lohith. In the clip, the creator criticized Alia’s leather-heavy Gucci outfit, alleging that it involved materials sourced from very young animals, including three-month-old calves and four-month-old lambs. The video also highlighted her choice of the Gucci Horsebit 1955 bag, calling it a symbol of how luxury fashion often exploits animals.
The creator directly questioned Alia’s values, pointing out the contrast between her love for her pet cat Edward and her fashion choices. He didn’t hold back, asking, “Seriously, Alia, is this what you stand for?” He further accused Gucci of using animal-derived materials from snakes, crocodiles, silkworms, cows, sheep, and goats.
What made the criticism sharper was the mention of Alia’s own animal welfare initiative, Coexist. The video called her stance hypocritical, suggesting that promoting coexistence while endorsing such fashion sends the wrong message—even labeling it as performative activism and a poor example for her daughter.
Although Rupali didn’t add any caption, her resharing of the video was widely seen as support for its message. Known for her deep love for animals, often visible on her social media, Rupali has previously described herself as having “the spirit of a tigress, the soul of an elephant, and the loyalty of a dog.”
Well Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt has remained silent on the controversy. While some fans support Rupali’s stance and advocate for ethical fashion, others argue that Alia’s outfit is simply a personal choice. The debate has once again brought attention to the ethics of luxury fashion and the growing demand for cruelty-free alternatives.
