Arjun Kapoor has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights, raising serious concerns over the misuse of his identity through AI-generated content and deepfakes. The plea highlights how his name, image, and likeness are allegedly being used without consent across digital platforms and even on merchandise, potentially harming his reputation and privacy.

The matter was heard on April 29 by Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, with advocate Pravin Anand representing the actor. Kapoor’s counsel explained that manipulated photos and videos of the actor have surfaced online, including morphed visuals placing him in explicit and objectionable scenarios. These, the lawyer argued, are created using artificial intelligence tools and go far beyond harmless fan edits.

According to the submissions, such content can mislead viewers into believing it is real, thereby damaging Kapoor’s public image. The lawyer stressed that these materials not only distort his identity but also commercialise and sexualise his likeness without permission. Highlighting the emotional toll, Anand remarked that no one would want to see themselves portrayed in vulgar or strange contexts.

During the hearing, Justice Gedela pointed out the limits of regulating content involving public figures. Referring to the DM Entertainment case, the judge observed that not all content can be restricted unless it is clearly defamatory or derogatory, adding that being in the public eye invites scrutiny.

The court has reserved its order on interim relief, stating it will balance personality rights with freedom of expression.

Well, Kapoor’s case adds to a growing list of similar legal actions by celebrities like Allu Arjun, Mohanlal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Karan Johar, Jubin Nautiyal, Pawan Kalyan, Sunil Gavaskar, Kajol, R. Madhavan, Nagarjuna, and Salman Khan, showing the rising concern around identity misuse in the age of AI.
