Making movies is no easy task, and when directors like Anurag Kashyap decide to bring unconventional stories to life, the process becomes even more challenging. Known for his intense, realistic, and dark storytelling, Anurag has often explored grim layers, even in love stories. One of his most beloved films, Dev D, stands out as an example. However, the journey to making this modern twist on Devdas was far from smooth.

Recently, during a conversation at the Marrakech International Film Festival, Kashyap revealed the numerous hurdles he faced while making Dev D. He shared how he had always wondered if he would ever fit in as a filmmaker in a country that adores love stories and songs. "How will I make films in this country?" he thought. Surprisingly, his solution to this was to include 18-19 songs in Dev D, a somewhat ironic twist for a director known for breaking away from traditional Bollywood.

Kashyap also talked about Devdas, the classic love story that inspired Dev D. Based on the book by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Devdas has always been one of India’s favorite love stories. However, Kashyap expressed a different opinion. He called Devdas a "terrible book" written by a "great author" who penned it at the age of 19. Although it became the author’s most popular work, Kashyap found his personal life story more intriguing. "I borrowed more from his personal story and picked up contemporary issues for Dev D," he said, making the film more relatable to modern audiences.

The challenges didn’t stop with the storyline. Finding the right cast, especially the female lead, was a struggle. Kashyap explained that many actresses refused to audition after reading the script due to the language and bold content. In a shocking incident, he even got slapped by an actress' boyfriend, who was offended by the script. "How dare you send the script to my girlfriend?" the boyfriend demanded. Kashyap apologized but didn’t let the rejection deter him.

Even his own producer initially rejected the script, calling it vulgar. However, Dev D eventually got made thanks to the producer's wife, who loved the script and convinced her husband to back the project.

Well, Dev D, starring Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, and Mahie Gill, went on to become a cult classic, showcasing that challenges in filmmaking can often lead to unexpected success.
