The romantic comedy Abir Gulaal, which marks the return of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan to Bollywood after an eight-year break, is already facing controversy. The film’s teaser, which was released recently, has ignited a political storm in Maharashtra, with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) strongly opposing its release in the state. The reason behind the opposition is the involvement of a Pakistani actor in the film, which has become a sensitive issue given the current political climate and India-Pakistan relations.

MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar made it clear that the party will not allow Abir Gulaal to release in Maharashtra. “We only learned about this film's release today when the makers announced it. But we are making it clear that we will not allow this film to release in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor,” he said. Khopkar also added that the MNS is gathering more information about the film and will issue a full statement soon regarding their stance.
The controversy surrounding the film has also attracted comments from Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam, who emphasized that the tension between India and Pakistan plays a significant role in how Pakistani artists are received in India. "There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India. When a film from Pakistan is released, Indian audiences do not prefer watching it," Nirupam remarked. He further suggested that the Indian government should step in and establish clear policies regarding the participation of Pakistani artists in Indian cinema.
Well, Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, Abir Gulaal also stars Vaani Kapoor. The film is produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. Filming took place in London, showcasing the city’s picturesque locations as part of its cross-cultural narrative. Despite the political opposition, the film aims to present a unique story to Indian audiences, reflecting the complexities of cultural exchanges in today's world.
